Peru’s President Under Scrutiny for Suspected Money Laundering

As part of an inquiry into allegations that they were involved in money laundering for a criminal organisation, Peruvian prosecutors announced late on March 28, 2023, Tuesday that they had begun looking into President Dina Boluarte and Former President Pedro Castillo.

The latest investigation comes the same week that Congress will determine whether to start accusation procedures against Boluarte, who only recently took office.

Under a revolutionary left platform, Castillo and Boluarte's united campaign won the 2021 polls. Castillo attempted to abolish congress and impose a dictatorship, but he was overthrown and incarcerated in December. Boluarte, who was a vice president at the time, was made president.

It will be investigated to see if Castillo and Boluarte acquired unethical funding for their 2021 campaign. Henry Shimabukuro, a former Castillo assistant, has admitted to financing Boluarte's campaign costs without revealing the assistance to Peru's election watchdog.

However, in office, Boluarte has been the subject of two criminal investigations. Additionally, investigators are examining if she assassinated or murdered people as she handled anti-government demonstrations that claimed the lives of over 60 civilians. Moreover, the president in Peru may be under investigation but not criminally convicted.
