Former Mexican State Governor jailed for 9 years on the count of Money Laundering

The US Department of Justice revealed that he took $3.5 million in bribes and laundered it during his service.
 

Yesterday, Former State Governor of Mexico, Tomas Yarrington 66, has been sentenced to 9 years in jail by the United States Court after being proven guilty of Money Laundering and bribery. Previously, Yarrington served as the governor of Tamaulipas till 2005.

The Case

US Attorney Alamdar S Hamdani said in a press release by the Department of Justice that, “The former politician accepted more than $3.5 million in the form of bribes from private companies and individuals to allow them for business with the State of Tamaulipas.

The US Department of Justice proved to the court that Yarrington has used the bribe money to buy luxury properties such as condominiums on the beachfront, estate and commercial properties, airplanes, and luxury vehicles.

“Whether a Governor of the State or not, You will not roam around free after the misuse of power and position to take bribes and violate United State laws. Today, the prison sentence concludes Yarrington’s long-standing case of Money Laundering and bribery. After years of investigation that spans two continents, the corrupt politician has been brought to justice.”

Yarrington being a Mexican citizen may also be deported after serving his sentence of 9 years.

Previous Charges on Yarrington

In 2017, Yarrington was arrested in Italy for traveling under a fake passport. While he first resisted the transfer to the US, he was sent to the US by Italian authorities upon the request of Mexico and US officials in 2018 where he pleaded guilty in March 2021.
